Greetings:

Although I generally try to maintain an apolitical stance on RF Cafe (both major parties are rotten in my opinion), I do feel compelled to comment on the apparent snub given to the British Prime Minister during his visit here last week. After having been presented with profoundly thoughtful presents by PM Brown, our country's administration reciprocated in an utterly shameful and insulting manner. Details are all over the news, so I will not reiterate details here.
 
I know I represent a large group of Americans in stating that the actions in no way reflect our view of the relationship we have had and desire to continue with the people of our heritage. I cannot apologize for the Administration, but do proclaim my shame in being represented by them in that way. Hopefully, attitudes in Washington will change.

Fortunately we still have a sense of humour over here, despite being required (note the imperative) to bail out banker's bonuses with the tax on our hard-earned engineers' wages.
A hopefully amusing BBC Radio 4 prog last Friday (called The Now Show) reported the affair thus-ly and I paraphrase:
Recently on a visit to the US, prime minister Gordon Brown presented the new US President with a plaque made from the timber from an 18th century warship, and the President presented Mr. Brown with a photo-opportunity that may save his premiership.
We are not insulted. We know our relative status in the world of power politics. An amusing cartoon in the Daily Telegraph many years ago showed Prime Minister McMillan and the Foreign Minister dozing to sleep in a London Club, with an open newspaper depicting the latest deep and smelly pit in Vietnam that the US was sliding into. The caption had the PM saying "It's kind of restful being a second-class world player"

Yeah I would prefer that the U.S. stop losing lives and dollars trying to keep Communism from advancing across Asia and Europe. We get no gratitude for it. I say pack it all up, bring it all home. Let every country fend for itself. Don't even sell weapons to foreign countries. If Commies try to move into Canada or Mexico we'll go to war. Otherwise, if it isn't on our soil or a bordering neighbor's soil... not our problem.

We have everything we need right here in the U.S. I'll gladly trade with the other countries, but let them take care of themselves. No more American blood or money for any other country. Let new Neville Chamberlains proclaim, "peace for our time," and then handle it themselves.

I was thrilled to see this. It gives me hope that all of Europe hasn't sold out to the uber Socialist mindset. I am amazed at how many people are willing to be sheep.
