Exploiting One in an Altered State - RF Cafe Forums

The original RF Cafe Forums were shut down in late 2012 due to maintenance issues - primarily having to spend time purging garbage posts from the board. At some point I might start the RF Cafe Forums again if the phpBB software gets better at filtering spam.

Below are the old forum threads, including responses to the original posts.

Greetings:

Although this story is not work-related, it does involve technology so I'll justify it accordingly.

Yesterday my son, Philip, had orthopedic surgery performed on his knee to remove some particles that had accumulated there. All went well, especially considering the surgeon thought from the MRI image that there was torn meniscus material. I guess the doc needs to take a remedial course in MRI interpretation.

Anyway, while in the recovery area, Philip was hooked up to the normal suite of vital sign monitoring equipment. One machine displayed blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, respiration, etc. After gaining near full consciousness, he was getting very antsy and want to get up and out of the surgical center. I noted the heart rate display and told him that it was a representation of the percentage of consciousness the patient was experiencing, and that he would not be released until he was at or above 90%.

Being young (20) and athletic (3rd degree black belt, etc.), his heart rate was a mere 58-60 beats per minute. I told him if he would move around a bit that he activity would increase his consciousness level, so, he moved around. Of course that increased his heart rate so the indication rose to about 75 bpm. He was certain he was on his way to a discharge until the number began falling back to 60 again. He moved around again to get the level up again, and again it fell. At that rate, I told him, he might have to be admitted as an overnight patient.

He finally figured out that I was exploiting his not-yet-fully-undrugged state. Ah, it’s nice to get back at your kids every once in a while for some of the grief they’ve caused you over the years!!!

Kirt, that's a riot! Now you've got me thinking about how to get even with my kids, even though all three are over 30 now...

RF Cafe began life in 1996 as "RF Tools" in an AOL screen name web space totaling 2 MB. Its primary purpose was to provide me with ready access to commonly needed formulas and reference material while performing my work as an RF system and circuit design engineer. The World Wide Web (Internet) was largely an unknown entity at the time and bandwidth was a scarce commodity. Dial-up modems blazed along at 14.4 kbps while tying up your telephone line, and a nice lady's voice announced "You've Got Mail" when a new message arrived...
