Greetings: One of today's headlines on RF Cafe is about a company called Apollo,
that has discovered a method of using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) to grow a 100%
pure diamond from a seed. They are the first to do it in a commercially viable manner.
Do you investment gurus in the audience think this would be a good long-term investment?
It seems like an incredible potential for big payoff.

I'd stay away. Some big corp will jump their claim and your money will be wasted. Good
idea to watch the progress if you're into diamond trading. It'd be like if someone figured
out to to make gold out of lead - the price of the mined stuff would plummet.

Haven't companies been making synthetic diamonds for 15+ years? Anyway, if these are
better and cheaper than the others, the price of diamonds will go through the floor...
lose their romantic $$ appeal, and they will be just a cheap gem and a very nice industrial
coating.

Yes, industrial grade synthetic diamonds have been around
for a long time. Gemological grade diamonds have not been produced in a manner that
is anywhere near competitive in cost with mined diamonds (according to the article).
Previous methods involved mashing carbon at astronomically high pressures & temperatures,
and only produced small samples - usually with many flaws. This new method "grows" perfect
(unflawed) diamonds from a seed.
BTW, thanks for your participation in all the

Hmmm. Perhaps if the creators of this new synth diamond go with the
Cruelty free diamond campaign. They may have
a chance. But in all reality I think even that would not help. Ask yourself why have
Zircons not become the latest in gem apparel? I can tell ya there are some damn nice
Zircons out there and I am sure your avg Joe would not be able to say if it were a diamond
or not.
My thinking is that non real diamonds just lack that appeal that a real
diamond has. It is not really about the looks of a diamond, it is about the rarity of
it, the cost etc...
