What's with the rebates for students? - RF Cafe Forums

The original RF Cafe Forums were shut down in late 2012 due to maintenance issues - primarily having to spend time purging garbage posts from the board. At some point I might start the RF Cafe Forums again if the phpBB software gets better at filtering spam.

Below are the old forum threads, including responses to the original posts.

I've been looking around for a new SUV for the first time in 15 years. It's really been p***ing me off to see all the dealers offering $500 rebates to students.

How can these companies show favortism toward ANY group? I'm truthfully not bothered by the $500 discount to active duty service members, but what have students done to earn a discount that I can't get?

My taxes pay to subsidize their colleges and in many (most?) cases their tuiton as well. Plus, now thanks to Obamacare my insurance rates are going up to cover people's kids up to age 24! This is a bunch of crap. I'm a veteran and an college grad, and nobody offered me a discount for either.

These are publicly traded companies, not private, so how do they get away with this form of discrimination?

Does anyone have any ideas on the best way to put a stop to this? :smt068

Greetings Ted Cline:

I'm with you on that one. Melanie and I have been searching around for a small SUV for about a year nad have been giving the car salesman a an earful on the inequity of treating some customers one way and other another. I seems like discrimination. It's hard to imagine how they get away with it in today's world.

Even though I went to college AND was in the USAF, I do not qualify for either rebate because I'm not currently involved in either. I can see offering deals to vetrerans, but college kids??? Like you point out, my taxes are largely subsidizing their college tuition already, why should I be expected to pay more for my car in order to give a break to someone else?

Although I'm not sure what net effect it will have, I'm glad to see the spirit of the 1773 Boston Tea Party is building momentum. Believe it or not, there was a group of Americans who sided with the King and did not want to separate from the overarching government. Today, there is an equivalent group who, almost entirely out of ignorance of what the original Tea Party was all about, who want to demonize the Tea Party people. The media likes to try to portray them as a violent group when everywhere they go it is peaceful and the grounds are litter-free. Compare that to the mobs at the recent Wisconsin state house and those who gather in Washington for their-side events... the areas look like a tornado blew through and emptied all the dumpsters everywhere.

I did a search for comparative photos. I don't know who owns the rights to them, so I'll link them from where I found them.

Here is the Mall in D.C. after the August 2010 rally for the Tea Party:

Notice any difference? You can find many similar instances. So, did you see these pics in the media?

RF Cafe began life in 1996 as "RF Tools" in an AOL screen name web space totaling 2 MB. Its primary purpose was to provide me with ready access to commonly needed formulas and reference material while performing my work as an RF system and circuit design engineer. The World Wide Web (Internet) was largely an unknown entity at the time and bandwidth was a scarce commodity. Dial-up modems blazed along at 14.4 kbps while tying up your telephone line, and a nice lady's voice announced "You've Got Mail" when a new message arrived...
