stockpile CRTs! - RF Cafe Forums

The original RF Cafe Forums were shut down in late 2012 due to maintenance issues - primarily having to spend time purging garbage posts from the board. At some point I might start the RF Cafe Forums again if the phpBB software gets better at filtering spam.

Below are the old forum threads, including responses to the original posts.

I have an idea for a smart guy that has some spare room in his basement or wherever: stockpile CRTs!

Why on earth, you should ask. CRTs are outphased by flatscreens in both TV and monitor applications, so why bother?

OK, you will have to wait for some time, but after a while I predict that the same will happen for TV that has happened for audio: a revival of the tube.

Just search the net for audio+tube and you will find 'audiophiles' that prefer the warm sound of tubes. They are prepared to pay top-dollar (or euro) for pre-second WW triode tubes to build their special amps. There is also a side market for capacitors and transformers. Believe it or not, they pay hunderds of dollars for output-transformers wound with silver wire. And they claim that they can hear the diference! They prefer old RCA-tubes over Russian and Chinese copies.

It might be wise to complete your stock with linetransformers, high tension components and deflectioncoils. Within a few years these components will be on the market for almost nothing

Within in a few decades you can expect 'tube videophiles' to emerge, that build their own TV-sets completely with tubes. They will claim better, more natural pictures with better color quality etc.etc. You can encourage this trend by writing some serious looking nonsense about is on the net by yourself.

This is the moment to come out with your basement New Old Stock (NOS) CRTs and become a rich man!

I regret not to have a large basement ....

RF Cafe began life in 1996 as "RF Tools" in an AOL screen name web space totaling 2 MB. Its primary purpose was to provide me with ready access to commonly needed formulas and reference material while performing my work as an RF system and circuit design engineer. The World Wide Web (Internet) was largely an unknown entity at the time and bandwidth was a scarce commodity. Dial-up modems blazed along at 14.4 kbps while tying up your telephone line, and a nice lady's voice announced "You've Got Mail" when a new message arrived...
