Communication satellite payload architecture simulation tool - RF Cafe Forums

The original RF Cafe Forums were shut down in late 2012 due to maintenance issues - primarily having to spend time purging garbage posts from the board. At some point I might start the RF Cafe Forums again if the phpBB software gets better at filtering spam.

Below are the old forum threads, including responses to the original posts.

Dear All;

If there exists any tool that will simulate the end-to-end payload achitecture starting with the receiver antenna upto the TX antenna, I would like to know.
Thanks for the info in advance,

Mehmet

I would start with a spreadsheet and work up from there.

Every time I have incorporated a VSAT system into an overall network, the supplier, back in the day it would be Marconi, BTI or Ferranti, had their own software model developed just as rfdave advises: from the block schematic of the satellite transponder transferred to a spreadsheet using the published parameters for each block. For example Rx G/T, min and max drive levels, Tx power output, Tx G/T and so on.
The power of this approach is that you need to study the transponder structure as well as the physical significance of the parameters. That way you get to understand how the system works, and what the answers from the model really mean.
If you go for a quick fix of applying someone else's software without studying what these blocks of the model do, then you can be easily misled.
To understand the answer it is best first to understand the question.

RF Cafe began life in 1996 as "RF Tools" in an AOL screen name web space totaling 2 MB. Its primary purpose was to provide me with ready access to commonly needed formulas and reference material while performing my work as an RF system and circuit design engineer. The World Wide Web (Internet) was largely an unknown entity at the time and bandwidth was a scarce commodity. Dial-up modems blazed along at 14.4 kbps while tying up your telephone line, and a nice lady's voice announced "You've Got Mail" when a new message arrived...
