System control software - RF Cafe Forums

The original RF Cafe Forums were shut down in late 2012 due to maintenance issues - primarily having to spend time purging garbage posts from the board. At some point I might start the RF Cafe Forums again if the phpBB software gets better at filtering spam.

Fellow Engineers,

I have been using VB 6.0 for about 5 years to do relatively simple system control software, but it is time to move on. I think MS will be stopping support soon. Does anyone out there have experience with migrating to the VB.NET platform, or is it better to just go with a more structured format like with LabView?

I have hundreds of routines written in VB 6.0, and if I'm going to have to go through the pain of conversino, I only want to do it once. Your opinions, please.

I believe that, once the initial hurdles are behind you, that you will be far more productive in LabView than in VB. Most engineers take to the "wiring up" of "instruments" model much better than the detailed command approach. Much of the work has already been done for most common equipment. If you have custom hardware, of course, that could change matters significantly - you'd have more work to do.
