RF carrer for baseband engineer. - RF Cafe Forums

The original RF Cafe Forums were shut down in late 2012 due to maintenance issues - primarily having to spend time purging garbage posts from the board. At some point I might start the RF Cafe Forums again if the phpBB software gets better at filtering spam.

hi RF gurus,
Thank you for reading my post. I wanted some help on figuring if a career in RF was right for me. I have a MS in EE and nine years experince in baseband communication system design (mod/demod, error correcting codes, MIMO, OFDM etc.). I also have expert knowledge in CDMA and LTE. I want to move to california (from NY) within next six months. Unfortunately, jobs in my areas of expertise have all but dried up. I was looking to update my skill so that more job opputrtunity open up for me. I found RF system design to be an attractive alternative.
Will self learning RF system design(in addition to my current expertise) open up oppurtunities? I realise circuit design is beyond my scope but i am not too choosy about the kind of work: I just want a foot hold in california.
Please advise.
Thanks

Hello bugsy,

The direction you want to pursue is excellent. From my experience in various telecommunication companies (Qualcomm is one among them), there is a shortage of system engineering who posses both baseband (DSP, Phy layer etc) & RF system knowledge. So if you can get additional RF system level knowledge by yourself it is great. Do not worry about lack of experience in circuit design, there are plenty of engineers in the market for that.

Good luck!

RF Cafe began life in 1996 as "RF Tools" in an AOL screen name web space totaling 2 MB. Its primary purpose was to provide me with ready access to commonly needed formulas and reference material while performing my work as an RF system and circuit design engineer. The World Wide Web (Internet) was largely an unknown entity at the time and bandwidth was a scarce commodity. Dial-up modems blazed along at 14.4 kbps while tying up your telephone line, and a nice lady's voice announced "You've Got Mail" when a new message arrived...
