The original RF Cafe Forums were shut down in late 2012 due to maintenance issues - primarily having to spend time purging garbage posts from the board. At some point I might start the RF Cafe Forums again if the phpBB software gets better at filtering spam.

Hey guys.

I've been an RF technician at a defense company here in FL (eastern seaboard) for almost 15 years, and am considered to be very competent. I'm making $17.30/hr ($36k/yr) - is that about right? It seems pretty low to me. Newly graduating engineers are starting at around $55k from what I hear.

Please let me know what you think.

 Maybe we should do a technician pay poll here.

Thanks.

That pay sounds about right for low cost areas like Melbourne, but definitely sucks for Miami, Jacksonville, etc. Face it, engineers will always make a LOT more than a technician. Those extra 2 years buy you a lot. Maybe it isn't fair, but why should lawyers get what they get? At least doctors come closer to earning their huge incomes since they're actually doing something for people (including ocassionally removing the wrong appendage). I'd say go get an engineering degree if you want the pay. It isn't easy, but lots of guys have gone back to school.

Good luck.

Love the smileys :!:

Well my job is more comprehensive then your standard tech job. I could be sent out in the field to install and proof a transmitter solo. I think I'm making 42k now. NJ/Philly area. I work worldwide though.

A lot of techs get turned off of completing college degrees due to the nature of the job. Being on standby, long hours on the road (if you're a road tech) or just on travel kills the opportunity...however, the man's right to say if you want the extra jingle, go for the 2 or 4 year degree..
however, remember this: most freshouts don't have the experience that you have and possibly the licenses that you do. Experience counts a lot.
And when you do complete your degree, you'll still be ahead of the curve of most of the freshouts as well as those that have been in the industry for 5 years or so...you are experienced AND degreed.
Makes sense to me...that's why I am going back after nearly 30 years in the comms biz...

Fl Tech,

As a Military trained RF Engineer without a EE Degree my starting pay was $53K in Northern VA. I have since moved to another Defense company and I have increased that considerably. I have also been offered positions in Central Florida with starting pays at $90K. I suggest you start you hunt for a new Job ASAP.

they are cheap. Get back to school, it will not be easy. Then move.
It is paradigma. If you work, your gained knowledge is not fully accounted. If you don't work, gain new knowledge.

Experience seems to be more important than education. After 15 yrs in the wireless field my pay has ranged from 50K to 90K.....(midwest) -
I was fortunate to "ride the wireless wave" that seems to have hit the shore!!! Right now, be thankful if you have a job!!!

RF Cafe began life in 1996 as "RF Tools" in an AOL screen name web space totaling 2 MB. Its primary purpose was to provide me with ready access to commonly needed formulas and reference material while performing my work as an RF system and circuit design engineer. The World Wide Web (Internet) was largely an unknown entity at the time and bandwidth was a scarce commodity. Dial-up modems blazed along at 14.4 kbps while tying up your telephone line, and a nice lady's voice announced "You've Got Mail" when a new message arrived...
