whether to accept a contract job or not? - RF Cafe Forums

The original RF Cafe Forums were shut down in late 2012 due to maintenance issues - primarily having to spend time purging garbage posts from the board. At some point I might start the RF Cafe Forums again if the phpBB software gets better at filtering spam.

Dear All,

I am an MSEE international student in US and will be graduating by this August. My area of interest is analog mixed-signal circuit / RFIC design. All I have is a 4.00 GPA and an internship experience in a small company. Very recently, I got a call for a contract position with a very reputed company in US. First a telephonic interview took place followed by an on-site interview. I did pretty well in the on-site interview and was given a hint that I might be offered a position. My task will be to design and test car radio systems. The following questions are coming to my mind. I need your advice.

1) Is it worth pursuing a system design career in RF? I am going to work with the same components (VCO, filters, amplifiers, etc.) but at a system level and not chip level. How difficult will be the transition if I decide later to switch from system level to circuit level?
2) The pay will be around 50k-55k. Is it worth it? A couple of my colleagues got jobs in reputed companies like Intel, Altera, etc. and their pay is about 70K.
3) The company is saying that it will make a permanent position for me after 6 months - 1 year. The company is reputed but what are the chances that it will stick to its statement?

Friends, I need you help in this regard.
