Building a Mobile Signal detector for my project - RF Cafe Forums

The original RF Cafe Forums were shut down in late 2012 due to maintenance issues - primarily having to spend time purging garbage posts from the board. At some point I might start the RF Cafe Forums again if the phpBB software gets better at filtering spam.

Hi there,
I am building a mobile signal detector which will use spread spectrum to pick up signals. It will detect GSM and 3G signals. I could really use a starting point here and any guidance in this would be highly appreciated.

Many Thanks,

If all you want to do is detect the presence of the signals, you could build a wideband detector circuit for the bands of interest, then do a little amplification into a threshold detector (comparator opamp circuit. The entire circuit could probably be built from scrap box parts. The antenna(s) could be simple 1/4-wave monopole.
