Test Proddy - RF Cafe Forums

The original RF Cafe Forums were shut down in late 2012 due to maintenance issues - primarily having to spend time purging garbage posts from the board. At some point I might start the RF Cafe Forums again if the phpBB software gets better at filtering spam.

The kit is your 1.5GHz spectrum analyser + tracking generator.
Scene is repairs - luckily not involving YIG oscillator. Yay, we found the dead capacitor in the Log-Amp. Now trying to recalibrate..

We are using one of those AVO-style flexi grab probes, the kind with two springy wires up a insulated spiral. You push the back plunger, and the little grabby hooks spring out.

Probe is deep in circuit between mounted boards, hanging in the hole in a test point tag. At this angle, the darn thing won't release, so its a bit of a wiggle. Probe releases, and you see SMOKE!

OK, there is no way the adrenalin rush and that deep seated sick feeling will be avoided, but lets not go all out panic. Can't smell it yet......huh....what is this !??

"Smoke" turns out to be little puffs of proby rust dust, wot wafts upwards between boards when you work the plunger. Dead ringer for smoke that - real panic - type crap. However harmless in the end, it took a couple of mins to make all the emotionals go away.
