Cellular Ant. locations and distance - RF Cafe Forums

The original RF Cafe Forums were shut down in late 2012 due to maintenance issues - primarily having to spend time purging garbage posts from the board. At some point I might start the RF Cafe Forums again if the phpBB software gets better at filtering spam.

So, mabye someone out there could help me out.
Does anyone know what the average distance for a cellular ant. is.
and yes, i know that terrain, power and height all play into it.
And then, is there a place to go that will show who uses what towers where. (not just cellular) I couldn't find anything on FCC pages.

just a geek looking for better service.

I have found that a 150-ft typical cellsite talks about 4 miles.......
There are many variables, so take it with a grain of salt!

In any cellular network be it GSM, CDMA or WLAN, there is a tradeoff between quality (ie BER) and capacity. You add more users (means more $), then you better make sure your frequency plan has minimal interference (ie good quality).

Go to a tower providers site, like Crown Castle, Pinnacle
Many show where there towers are, that they then lease
to the providers.

Here's one link:

The freq also plays a large part in it. As well as beam width.

Hi amBOFH, average ht of cellular antennas in City proper is around 25m. Using a panel antenna with a gain on 17dbi, it gives you roughly 250 to 300 meters. Its using an 1800 spectrum. Hope it helps. - mcloud_30
