Increasing Wi-Fi SNR with NLoS - RF Cafe Forums

The original RF Cafe Forums were shut down in late 2012 due to maintenance issues - primarily having to spend time purging garbage posts from the board. At some point I might start the RF Cafe Forums again if the phpBB software gets better at filtering spam.

How can I figure out what type of antenna (e.g. omni, Yagi, parabolic, etc) I should use to increase my SNR to an 802.11n router signal to which I do not have line of sight? A straight line running between the antennas would run through approximately 30 m of interior construction. With a 1 dBi antenna the noise is at about -92 dB while the signal can range between -70 dB down to -90 dB and the link is frequently lost. How can I figure out how much gain on my antenna would be appropriate, 6 dBi, 12 dBi, 15 dBi, and what pattern would be appropriate?

I’m an EE but I have no RF experience and I'm looking to learn more about how to make such decisions.

I would greatly appreciate your advice or any references or tutorials you can point me to.
