The copper thickness-->affect the PCB antenna and RF trac - RF Cafe Forums

Dear all,

For the original design, the copper thickness at toppest and lowest PCB is 1.5oz. If we change it to the 0.5oz or 1.0oz thickness, what were the effect for the PCB antenna and the RF trace path? (The PCB antenna and the RF trace path are on the toppest and lowest PCB) Do I need to re-design the PCB antenna dimension and the width of the RF trace path after I change the thickness of the copper?

Hey Cheng, copper thickness will not make much difference. Take a look at the effective trace width and and substrate height equations and you will see trace has a very small effect. Nevertheless, you will probably want to adjust it to get maximum performance, particularly when allowing for ecthing tolerances.

From my experience,

the effect of copper thickness is negligible. Go and build your antenna...

same here. If you model it in HFSS, you see barely any difference between 0.5 and 1.5oz copper traces. Also, you can safely model the trace with an infinitesimal sheet.

FYI, I have seen this for frequencies from 1-6GHz...
