Frequency for leaded RLCs - RF Cafe Forums

The original RF Cafe Forums were shut down in late 2012 due to maintenance issues - primarily having to spend time purging garbage posts from the board. At some point I might start the RF Cafe Forums again if the phpBB software gets better at filtering spam.

Hi People. I've always done electronics maintenance, not design. But I'm wanting to do some experimentation on some remote control low power circuits (train layout for switching and lights). I don't want to have to fool with the surface mount components because they're too hard to work with without special equipment. What is a good rule of thumb for the highest frequency I can use without having to worry to much about lead inductance for resistors, inductors, and capacitors. Any other gotchas for leaded circuits?

Thanks for any help.

Hello Tbone,

Up to a frequency of 1MHz you should not expect any big problems.

However, if you plan to use any switched mode power supplies (Buck or Boost converters), I would recommend to use SMD components because the layout has a crucial effect on the performance of these circuits.

I hope this helps.
