SOLT and TRL - RF Cafe Forums

The original RF Cafe Forums were shut down in late 2012 due to maintenance issues - primarily having to spend time purging garbage posts from the board. At some point I might start the RF Cafe Forums again if the phpBB software gets better at filtering spam.

Would it be possible to elucidate why SOLT is the preffered mode of calibration at low frequencies and TRL at higher frequencies? What is generally the more accurate mode of calibration?

Greetings shireesha:

I am not an expert on the SOLT vs. TRL calibrations, but I have read that the difficulty in making a good open circuit cal standard at really high frequencies is the reason. Here is an excerpt from "Microwave Measurements," by Richard J. Collier, A. Douglas Skinner

If you want to use TRL at low frequencies than the size of the calibration standard (line section) will be very large....
