Tunnel diode versus dual gate MOSFET - RF Cafe Forums

The original RF Cafe Forums were shut down in late 2012 due to maintenance issues - primarily having to spend time purging garbage posts from the board. At some point I might start the RF Cafe Forums again if the phpBB software gets better at filtering spam.

Below are the old forum threads, including responses to the original posts.

Would like to exchange your experience with tunnel diode, high stability oscillators. Lets say 400MHz to start with. It seems to me, they have much cleaner output and stability compared to bjt.

Tunnel diodes are an older technology that's harder to buy than BJTs. (Almost) no new devices have been introduced in the last decade. That's a good indicator that other approaches work better.

Check out Randy Rhea's book on oscillator design - he does a good job of providing analysis tools for oscillator noise.
