diode characterization by NWA, max operating frequency etc? - RF Cafe Forums

Post subject: diode characterization by NWA, max operating frequency etc?

I have checked an diode at DC and low freq and verified that it works as an diode, but how should I being able to "proof" the maximum operating freq for my diode if I want to use it for high freq applications (0.1GHz to 3Hz)?

My intention is to use an 2-port NWA there the diode is connected in series and measured with zero bias at various freq. and power levels. How to use and interpret the results etc and how to check max operating frequency for the diode?

I would forward bias the diode like switch with DC bias and use the network analyzer to see where the insertion loss rolls off to the 3dB point. That would be your Fmax. Make sure you have DC blocking and an inductor for the return for the current.

Is it necessary for the 2-port series connected diode to include the inductor to ground at say the right port when NO forward dc-bias is connected to the diode? That means, only the diode is series connected with the microstrip to the 2-port NWA for being able to characterize the S21/S12 -3dB cutoff, fmax for the diode.

The diode is intended to be used as an rectifier for RF input with NO bias where the diodes fmax is needed.

Should I also make my own calibration set to remove the losses for the microstrip and if necessary also include the inductor to ground in the calibration set (say thru, reflect, line)?
