Applying for security clearance in advance?? - RF Cafe Forums

The original RF Cafe Forums were shut down in late 2012 due to maintenance issues - primarily having to spend time purging garbage posts from the board. At some point I might start the RF Cafe Forums again if the phpBB software gets better at filtering spam.

Hello,

I am a Canadian citizen with a master's in RF/MMIC design. I have noticed that most of the jobs posted in this field in the U.S. require a security clearance of some kind. I have two questions:

1) Does anyone know of Canadians working in this field in the U.S., having attained required security clearances? (i.e. What's the skinny on landing a job in this area in the U.S.)

2) Are there ways of applying for a security certificate of some kind in advance that would help smooth the process of trying to apply for RF/MMIC jobs in the U.S.?

1.) I don't think a non US citizen can get clearance except under special circumstances.

2.) You can't apply for clearance. The company that hires you does that. There is no way for you to apply on your own. A company that has facility clearance applies for personnel clearances for its employees and contractors that need one.

The best bet for working in the US as a Canadian Citizen is to obtain a TN1 Visa, this i believe is obtained at the border upon showing proof of employment in the US - or it can also be arranged for by your employer.

As for security, I have asked around because i too am looking in the US for RF related jobs, and I have been told that they are still evaluating the TN1 visa for issues like ITAR and CGP security

Clearances are applied for by the employer from the Department of Defense. If you are not a US citizen, you will never get hired at the company in the first place, and therefore will never get to apply for the clearance at all. My advice is, if you are looking for IC design jobs, visit http://www.dice.com. They have commercial jobs you might fit into that don't require US citizenship, but you will still have to have a work visa or green card first.
