Unless college has changed a lot since I graduated
(1989), then do not think that not understanding the terms and principles
of real-world engineering means you have no hope. Most college textbooks
do a good job of imparting basic technical knowledge without necessarily
imparting practical knowledge. If the practical is included, it is usually
hidden within the plethora of equations and graphs.
In the last
5-10 years there have been many books written that cover exactly the
topics you are interested in. Unfortunately, most seem to be priced
over $100, so unless you can access them in a college library or at
work, it will be very expensive.
I keep a fairly up-to-date list
of book on wireless systems on the following page on RF Cafe. I have
read two or three of them just in the last year and have found them
very helpful. Amazon has a feature where they print the table of contents
and index and a few of the pages in the body of the book so you can
get a pretty good idea of what is inside. You can also read through
some of the reviews to see what other thought of the book.
Good luck in your search.
