Beware CARFAX Reports - RF Cafe Forums

The original RF Cafe Forums were shut down in late 2012 due to maintenance issues - primarily having to spend time purging garbage posts from the board. At some point I might start the RF Cafe Forums again if the phpBB software gets better at filtering spam.

Greetings:

I have used the CARFAX reports when buying used vehicles for many years, as have many people I know. Here is a response from the company that might interest you regarding their concern for completeness.

My letter to them:

I ran a CARFAX report on my 1995 Tracer, which I purchased in Colorado Springs, CO, in 2000, and my purchase never shows up. The 06/01/2000 entry in your report represents our purchase. We have since moved to NC, where the other inspections are listed. The VIN is 3MASM15J9SR623740. Please ammend your records accordingly.

We just used CARFAX to qualify a 1997 Saturn for purchase for our daughter, and a year ago for our 1998 Ford Explorer. What guarantee do we have that the CARFAX reports are accurate for those two vehicles?

Hello Kirt,

Thank you for contacting CARFAX.

All the information that the State has provided to CARFAX for this vehicle is located on the CARFAX report. At this time we do not offer any additional research.

Maybe I'm being too sensitive, but I think the response is rather dismissive. What has your experience been?

I used them once for a used Chevy and it seemed OK, but I never even thought that it might be missing information. It was for a Camaro that my son bought. Who would have guessed that such easy to get information might be missing?

You're right about the "too bad so sad" attitude of Carfax. No apology or anything.
