RF radiation hazard - RF Cafe Forums

The original RF Cafe Forums were shut down in late 2012 due to maintenance issues - primarily having to spend time purging garbage posts from the board. At some point I might start the RF Cafe Forums again if the phpBB software gets better at filtering spam.

Below are the old forum threads, including responses to the original posts.

I noticed this topic in the news sheet at the RF-Cafe front page:

What Are The Health Effects Of Wireless Communication Devices?
ScienceDaily (Jan. 18, 2008) — The rapid increase in the use of wireless communication devices in recent years has been accompanied by a significant amount of research into potential health effects from high exposure to radiofrequency (RF) energy emitted by these devices. A new National Research Council report, requested by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, identifies research that could further extend understanding of long-term low exposure to these devices.

So, this is yet another proposal to study the subject, but my point is this (as I often reply when quizzed on the topic by non-RF-engineers) : firemen, para-medics and police officers have been using 5 watt output UHF and VHF mobiles for around 40 years. They belong to well-set up trade unions (I guess) who would pounce on any employer requiring the use of these devices by their employess if and when statistics showed their members were dying of strange ailments that could be attributed to radio waves.
I have never heard any such complaint. Have any of our readers?

Greetings nubbage:

My guess is that there is not a large enough user base of utility radios for a potentially huge class action lawsuit that would be necessary for the lawers of the world to reap handsome profits. Of course nobody will admit to such conspiracies. It just so happens that the bands where cell phones, WLAN and micro ovens work are especially harmful to humans.

Oh, and don't forget those deadly fields at the other end of the EM spectrum - 50/60 Hz from overhead power lines.

Take care.
