The simplest way to make phase noise measurements
with a spectrum analyser will be detailed in John
Miles website at :
http://www.speakeasy.org/~jmiles1/ke5fx/gpib/pn.htm
Look at the section on PN.EXE for info on making
the measurements. In
particular, follow the link
in the PN.EXE information to the HP Application
Note AN 270-2. Phase noise measurements couldn't
be easier! I have a TEK 495P analyser and use a
GPIB-to-USB dongle (see link for dongle information
below).

With the dongle providing the interface between
my analyser and my desktop or laptop, and using
John Miles PN.EXE software, phase noise measurements
are amazingly quick and easy. The dongle will work
with a wide assortment of analysers- check the list
to see if yours is included.
