Job Description: Sr. RF Engineer / Sr. Electrical Engineer
Location: Houston, Texas
Job Summary:
Quaise develops millimeter wave drilling systems for deep geothermal heat access.
Our technology is the only approach in the world with the potential to build geothermal
wells at unprecedented depths and temperatures. Quaise’s technology consists of
a source of millimeter wave (MMW) such as a
gyrotron operating in continuous
wave mode and at high power, to vaporize subsurface rock.
Our gyrotron-powered drilling platform vaporizes boreholes through
rock and provides access to deep geothermal heat without complex downhole equipment.
Based on breakthrough fusion research and well-established drilling practices, we
are developing a radical new approach to ultra-deep drilling.
Quaise is seeking an accomplished electrical engineer or physicist with at least
5 years work experience. Specific discipline of study and/or work in radio frequency
is required, preferably high power RF transmission over waveguide. Ideal candidate
would have experience in both the RF and high voltage (20 kV+) field.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The primary responsibility of this role is to oversee development of waveguide,
gyrotron, high voltage power supply and other MMW technologies for the Quaise MMW
Drilling System.
Candidate would be at the forefront of technology development for geothermal
application, which involves researching, collaborating, specifying, sourcing, integrating,
implementing, performing DOE, analyzing results, and building on lessons learned.
Ability to troubleshoot and recover is a must.
Qualifications and Experience Requirements:
Master’s degree in engineering (Electrical, Electronics, RF, power engineering)
or Physics degree. Bachelor’s degree may be considered if coupled with several years’
experience in industry.
Minimum 5 years in industry, 10 years preferred. Experience gained in the specific
fields listed below are a plus:
- EM wave understanding (10-150 GHz), including basic principles, different
mode, mode conversion, wave polarization, filtering.
- Wave propagation and waveguide transmission line design. Understanding of propagation
in rectangular and cylindrical waveguides.
- Design and use of waveguide mirrors, miter bends, polarizer, tapers, bends,
mode converters, and other transmission line architecture.
- Wave attenuation, wave interaction with environment, noise, and other wave behaviors.
- Handling reflected power, impedance matching, load and dummy load design. -
Wave network analysis.
- Vacuum tube, cavity resonators, and other high power EM wave generators such
as a gyrotron.
- Principles of electron beam tubes, particularly gyrotron.
- Familiarity with electromagnetism, super conducting magnets, physics of magnetic
fields.
- Use of CAD or modelling software (HFSS, CST, MATLAB, COMSOL, etc.) used to simulate
wave propagation and effects of environment on the wave.
Millimeter wave drilling will unlock the most abundant and powerful
clean energy source on Earth by allowing us to drill down to 20 km and 500° C.
By 2024, Quaise Energy plans to have its first full-scale hybrid drilling rig
combining conventional rotary drilling and millimeter wave drilling capabilities.
By 2026, Quaise Energy plans to have the first Super Hot Enhanced Geothermal
System rated to 100 MW of thermal energy from a handful of wells.
By 2028, Quaise Energy plans to have its first fossil-fired power plant repowered
with clean geothermal steam.
