Phase Matrix Achieves 100 GHz Diplexed Broadband Downconversion

July 31, 2013     Santa Clara, CA

Phase Matrix, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of National Instruments (Nasdaq: NATI), participated in the demonstration of the world's first 100 GHz real-time oscilloscope. The integrated microwave assembly designed by Phase Matrix for the demonstration is a broadband downconverter, which allows the successful acquisitioning and displaying of live signals at 100 GHz bandwidth. The unique frequency converter combines state-of-the-art diplexer technology with active and passive RF functions to meet stringent requirements of wide dynamic range, high linearity, low noise, gain flatness, and extremely wide IF bandwidths.

Phase Matrix and Teledyne LeCroy's longstanding partnership has resulted in the development of the fastest oscilloscopes in the world. The two together have achieved 30, 36, 45, 65 and now 100 GHz oscilloscope speeds.

The broadband diplexed downconverter that enables Digital Bandwidth Interleaving at 100 GHz is an example of the state of the art in this domain,” said James Truchard, President, Chief Executive Officer, and Cofounder of National Instruments.

The demonstration of Teledyne LeCroy's 100 GHz oscilloscope was conducted at the Teledyne facility in Thousand Oaks, CA on July 24, 2013. Leaders from both Phase Matrix and Teledyne were present to acknowledge this remarkable advance in test-and-measurement technology.

About Phase Matrix
In 1999 former employees of EIP Microwave, a well-established and longtime manufacturer of RF and microwave T&M instruments, purchased a substantial amount of EIP's assets to form Phase Matrix, Inc. In their senior technical roles at EIP, the founders of Phase Matrix contributed significantly to EIP's most innovative products, including continuous-wave and pulsed microwave counters and VXIbus synthesizers, counters, and down converters. The company vigorously supports the large installed-base of EIP products under the EIP brand.

RF Cafe began life in 1996 as "RF Tools" in an AOL screen name web space totaling 2 MB. Its primary purpose was to provide me with ready access to commonly needed formulas and reference material while performing my work as an RF system and circuit design engineer. The World Wide Web (Internet) was largely an unknown entity at the time and bandwidth was a scarce commodity. Dial-up modems blazed along at 14.4 kbps while tying up your telephone line, and a nice lady's voice announced "You've Got Mail" when a new message arrived...
