A POWER TUBE MARKET
At the doors of digitalization worldwide, most countries of the world still use
tubes in their transmitters. Latin America is a part of this market where companies
such as RF Power Exchange excels in charge of distribution of new and reconstructed
tubes. In this opportunity Reporting line talks with David Gilden, vice-president
of sales and commercialization of RF Power Exchange.
World Radio (RW): Tell us about RF Power Exchange, its objectives and how it
gets to be developed?
David Gilden (DW): RF Power Exchange was formed like a result of several months
of conversations with the users and the distributors of the market of the diffusion
in all Latin America. As many of countries suffered difficult economies, there were
two constant orders.
First, they looked for alternatives to the present suppliers in the market. And
secondly, they looked for the opportunity to work with one company that could offer
low prices with alternatives of high quality. And also they looked for formality
and a constant answers to their necessities.
Our company is an authorized distributor for sales of new and reconstructed tubes
for transmission from Econco. We offer enormous value and trustworthiness in comparison
with the other brands that they are offered at the moment in the market. With Comet
AG, we offer condensers with high quality and good prices and superior qualities
to those of our competitors.
Also, we are working with products for RF, with the main manufacturers of transistors
and modules.
Our goal is to work with the best distributors, which are in charge to provide
the pieces as spare part.
RW: Which is the transformation with the greater importance that is occurring
in the radial industry in Latin America?
DG: After of months of conversations with the market of radio in Latin America,
one of the common questions was if it's more economical to buy a transmitter
of solid state accustomed to a level of greater power to the 15 kW for FM.
With Nautel, Harris and BE which they produce transmitters of 40kW of accustomed
solid state, this. With solid state there are replacements or changes of no tube,
but it can exist the necessity of a new engineer with greater studies in technology
regarding solid state.
As far as RF Power Exchange, we can support both options. We can provide the
tubes of transmission to those who wish to remain with their transmitters of tube,
and also have the transistors or the modules of solid state.
RW: What is your vision on the future of the digital transmissions in the region?
DG: Ours vision of digital technology and its impact in Latin America is more
that an economical answer. In the side of the radial market there are great advantages
for both standards that compete today, IBOC and DRM. The A.M. improved its sound
when passing to digital to a quality like the one of the analog sound of FM. and
the digital FM to the quality of a CD. This really is of interests to the end user?
If we paid attention to the cost we will be able to see the following thing in Latin
America. If IBOC becomes standard of digital radio favorites, we will see transmitters
of solid-state digital smaller externally diplex in existing analog transmitters.
If DRM becomes the favorite standard we will see a digital front and retrofits
in the existing analog transmitters. On the other hand, also the impact of the radio
based on technology is expected in Latin America. For instance satellite, which
can get to be expensive. I believe that the manufacturers of automobiles are going
to play an important role in this change, when many of the consumers try to obtain
this service in their automobiles. At the moment, the taxes are too high.
RW: Do you which to add something else?
DG: Whereas the American and Latin American broadcasters wanted to have a better
sound in the case of the television and more options, I believe that the traditional
analog systems still would base for the next decade. Due to this, we are going to
continue supporting the spare parts necessary to maintain old technology while we
got ready to continue with any digital initiative.
