Nuclear plant fail-safe deisgn - RF Cafe Forums

It occurred to me while reading the coverage of the nuclear reactor melt-down in Japan that maybe a good strategy would be to build the reactor itself below sea level so that if a breech occurs, a one-way barrier could be opened (explosively if necessary due to lack of power) that would allow sea water to flow into the reactor chamber.

At the same time, it seems that another fail-safe might be to have the moderator rods automatically fall back into the containment housings. Maybe in newer designs that is already done. It seems too simple, so if not done, there must be a good reason.

Of course in the end the entire plant would be useless, but it would be anyway if such an extreme scenario were to take place.
