How to not spill coffee while walking - RF Cafe Forums

The original RF Cafe Forums were shut down in late 2012 due to maintenance issues - primarily having to spend time purging garbage posts from the board. At some point I might start the RF Cafe Forums again if the phpBB software gets better at filtering spam.

Below are the old forum threads, including responses to the original posts.

Greetings:

Coffee is an important engineering subject, so I tought you might like knowing about this tidbit I read in Scientific Amercan about how to aviod siplling your coffee while wlaking from the break room to your cubicle or to a meeting.

The writer, Rod Roduin, notes that the secret can be found by observing waiters in restaurants. They manage to carry multiple drinks, filled nearly to the top of the cups and/or glasses, without spilling a drop while walking quickly around the dining area. Their secret:

Long stride, short stride. Long stride, short stride. :smt038

Break up any rhythm that could set up a resonance in the vessles, and the sloshing is prevented.

I'll have to remember that.

holding a tray full of full glasses is much easier. the resonant frequency for the whole system is much much lower (many times greater moment of inertia). also they are holding it from below and use the elbow joint as suspension to absorb variations in height.

that's my observation as a physicist anyway :-s
