Each
week, I select a new book that is relevant to engineers, scientists, students, hobbyists or managers.
Most of the time they are sold through Amazon (I earn a few pennies on each sale), but when possible,
I present books that are available in an e-book format that can be downloaded for free. The latter
are much less available. After all, most people like to be paid for their work, as I'm certain
that you do, too.
Note: I just began archiving these picks in May of 2009, but they have been going on since
about 2003.

Waveform
Design for Active Sensing Systems: A Computational Approach, by Hao He Hao He, Jian Li,
and Petre Stoica. With a focus on developing computational algorithms for examining waveform
design in diverse active sensing applications, this guide is ideal for researchers and practitioners
in the field. The three parts conveniently correspond to the three categories of desirable
waveform properties: good aperiodic correlations, good periodic correlations and beam pattern
matching. In addition to numerical results, the authors present theoretical analyses describing
lower bounds or limitations of performance. 8/20/2013
With
engineering classes about to begin again in a couple weeks, this would be a good time to get
yourself a little survival knowledge - particularly if you are a freshman.
Engineering Student Survival Guide might be a good place to start for you, your kid, or
a friend. "The third edition of this wildly successful text provides information and strategies
for engineering students to get the most out of their college education. From freshman orientation
to senior year and beyond, this book covers topics pertinent and unique to all engineering
students. " 8/13/2013
High-Frequency
Integrated Circuits, by Rosin Voinigescu. A transistor-level, design-intensive overview
of high speed and high frequency monolithic integrated circuits for wireless and broadband
systems from 2 GHz to 200 GHz, this comprehensive text covers high-speed, RF, mm-wave,
and optical fibre circuits using nanoscale CMOS, SiGe BiCMOS, and III-V technologies. Step-by-step
design methodologies, end-of chapter problems, and practical simulation and design projects
are provided, making this an ideal resource for senior undergraduate and graduate courses
in circuit design. With an emphasis on device-circuit topology interaction and optimization,
it gives circuit designers and students alike an in-depth understanding of device structures
and process limitations affecting circuit performance. This book is the subject to
RF Cafe Quiz #49. 6/12/2013

Troubleshooting
and Repairing Commercial Electrical Equipment, by David Herres, is another in a series
where he has leveraged his many years working as a Master Electrician. It is his first work
that offers a practical approach to diagnosing and repairing commercial / industrial electrical
equipment – covering everything from motors, computers, elevators, and fire alarm systems
to heavy-duty ovens and audio equipment. This one-of-a-kind guide can help you become more
competent in your profession. Inside you'll find ways to become faster, more efficient, and
able to achieve a much higher success rate in restoring large electrical equipment without
damaging it, introducing an additional defect, or creating a hazard. Note: I did a review
of his last book titled ,"2011
NEC Chapter-by-Chapter." 8/27/2013
Antennas
and Site Engineering for Mobile Radio Networks, by Bruno Delorme. This is the first book
to discuss the specific antennas used in cellular and Private Mobile Radio
(PMR) networks. These are the antennas located on pylons in rural
areas and tubular masts on rooftops in more populated areas. The book presents essential information
for engineers, managers, and technicians working for mobile phone equipment manufacturers,
network integrators, and antenna installation companies. The book is divided into three sections:
the first section describes the functioning of all types of antennas used in mobile phone
networks and provides examples of each; the second part delves into the engineering of antenna
sites, which is crucial to the quality of mobile networks; the third part of the book includes
refresher information on the mathematics and physics necessary to understand the content of
the book and put it to practical use in actual applications.

Microstrip
Lines and Slotlines, by Ramesh Garg, Inder Bahl, and Maurizio Bozzi. Planar transmission
line technology has progressed considerably due to developments in UWB communications, imaging,
and RFID applications. In addition, the simultaneous demands for compactness of wireless electronic
devices while meeting improved performance requirements, necessitates increased use of computer-aided
design, simulation, and analysis by microwave engineers. This book is written to help engineers
successfully meet these challenges. Details include the development of governing equations,
basis functions, Green's function and typical results. More than 1200 equations supplement
the text. Special attention is given to the use of simulation software.

Microwave
Mixer Technology, by Bert Henderson and Edmar Camargo, is published by Cambridge
University Press. Although microwave mixers play a critical role in wireless communication
and other microwave applications employing frequency conversion circuits, engineers find that
most books on this subject emphasize theoretical aspects, rather than practical applications.
That's about to change with the forthcoming release of Microwave Mixer Technology and Applications.
Based on a review of over one thousand patents on mixers and frequency conversion, authors
Bert Henderson and Edmar Camargo have written a comprehensive book for mixer designers who
want solid ideas for solving their own design challenges.

I'm
a big comic strip reader.
Dilbert, of course, is required reading. The
Erie Times-News paper has a weenie collection
of comics, so I have to go online for most of my favorites. Here is a unique collection of
full-color Sunday strips. "Since Dilbert was first syndicated in 1989, Adams has built a following
that would be the envy of any corporate sales and marketing team. His work not only generates
howls from readers as they rush to plaster it on lunch-room refrigerators and scan it into
interoffice e-mails, it has those same fans reading about "their" workplaces every Sunday
in a multiple-panel, color format. And that's what this treasury, The Collected Dilbert Sundays,
provides." 7/30/2013
Handbook
of Reflector Antennas and Feed Systems Volume 3: Applications of Reflectors, by Sudhakar
Rao, Lotfollah Shafai, and Satish K. Sharma This is the first truly comprehensive and most
up-to-date handbook available on modern reflector antennas and feed sources for diversified
space and ground applications. There has never been such an all-encompassing reflector handbook
in print, and no currently available title offers coverage of such recent research developments.
The Handbook consists of three volumes. Volume 3 focuses on the range of reflector antenna
applications, including space, terrestrial, and radar. This book covers recent developments
of reflector antennas used for satellite communications, terrestrial communications, and remote
sensing applications. 7/2/2013 |

Introduction
to Radar Systems, by Merrill Skolnik. Since the publication of the second edition of "Introduction
to Radar Systems," there has been continual development of new radar capabilities and continual
improvements to the technology and practice of radar. This growth has necessitated the addition
and updating of the following topics for the third edition: digital technology, automatic
detection and tracking, Doppler technology, airborne radar, and target recognition. The topic
coverage is one of the great strengths of the text. In addition to a thorough revision of
topics, and deletion of obsolete material, the author has added end-of-chapter problems to
enhance the "teachability" of this classic book in the classroom, as well as for self-study
for practicing engineers. 7/9/2013 |
